A Tree By Water

By Luisa Garcia

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Inspiring and challenging.

This scripture grabs at my heart.

The first time I came across it, I was sitting on the living room floor with Linda Tucker during a Bible study. At first, I just mindlessly read it and thought, “Oh, okay that’s cool, nice”, but she paused and allowed me to really visualize what was going on. My thoughts: Okay, a tree. Next to the water. Yeah water is good, that’s good. It’s thriving. It has what it needs. It’s not lost. Or confused. It has a source that feeds it. A place to dig its roots, to confide in. Wait, what was the source again? The Lord. Oh so not my test scores? Or sports? Or how many friends I have? Or how cool my house is? Or my clothes? Or my car? Or anything else I’ve ever trusted in? Hmmm. #convicted.

The tree only flourishes because its roots draw from God.

Am I planted by the water? Am I flourishing because I draw my nourishment and energy from God?

I want to be that tree. I want to be the tree that the Lord himself describes.

If we truly want to be beautiful, fruit bearing, tree climbing, next to the river sitting trees then we have to:

  • Choose to put our daily confidence in something sustainable, God.
  • Root ourselves in His word. Having scriptures on hand to run through our heads in our moments of heat and drought.

**And side note, always take your time reading scripture so that you don’t miss all the goodness of God’s word 🙂
